Thieves Manipulate Dispenser to Steal Fuel
May 28, 2019 |
On Friday, May 24, Iowa Weights and Measures Bureau inspectors notified FUELIowa staff that they had uncovered a series of fuel dispensers that had been tampered with. Upon further investigation, inspectors were able to confirm that the devices had been manipulated to allow the metering device to spin without registering the price for the sale. All incidents occurred on Gilbarco’s Horizon Veeder-Root dispenser by key or by prying open the bottom panel on the dispenser. Upon accessing the cavity of the dispenser, thieves forced the white plastic piece pictured below up which technicians confirmed allowed the meter to operate without registering a price for sale. FUELIowa members with this type of dispenser are encouraged to check for signs of tampering. Gilbarco is aware of the issue and is working on a solution to prevent future incidents.
