With over 85% of all payment transactions occurring at retail motor fuel outlets taking place using an electronic payment method, the retail fuel industry has been a primary target for the placement of skimming devices. The target on our industry is heightened by our focus on convenience and the accessibility of the motor fuel dispensers located in the forecourt of our retail sites. Over the last year, independent efforts between state regulators and law enforcement have uncovered more than 20 skimming devices located inside of retail motor fuel dispensers. Moreover, regulators have uncovered numerous instances where pumps appeared to have been tampered with and the skimming device likely already removed. Additional skimming devices have also been uncovered within carwashes, ATM’s, and outdoor movie dispensing devices.
