Recent data released by the Iowa Legislative Services Agency shows annual Iowa new vehicle registrations (cars, multipurpose vehicles, and light trucks) declined significantly from 164,541 vehicles for the 12 months ending November 2004 to 98,618 for the 12 months ending December 2009. Growth in the annual number of new registrations turned positive with the May 2010 reading. While remaining below the previous peak, new vehicle registrations recovered significantly through the end of 2015, with registrations totaling 147,447 that year. However, the last 11 months of 2016 have collectively posted lower vehicle registrations when compared to the same months of 2015, and the 12-month moving total has decreased 7,797 vehicles (5.3%) since January 2016.
