William “Bill” D. Sapp, 86, of Ashland, NE, passed away Thursday, April 4, 2019 at Oxbow Living Center in Ashland, NE. He was born April 20, 1932 in Beatrice, NE to Hurless and Emily (Hubka) Sapp. Bill graduated from Diller High School in 1949. Bill served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War until he was honorably discharged. On January 24, 1953, Bill was united in marriage to Lucille Johnson in Chappell, NE. He attended college at Fairbury Community College and the University of Nebraska.
Through the years, Bill taught at Polk Jr. High School, Franklin Jr. High School and worked for Prudential Insurance. With his three brothers, Bill founded Sapp Bros. Inc. and Sapp Bros. Petroleum, which included Sapp Bros. Ford, Sapp Bros. GMC and the Sapp Bros. Travel Centers. He was a member of Word of Hope Lutheran Church in Ashland, Gideons International, American Legion #129 and Ashland Men in Mission. He was a board member of Good News Prison and Jail Ministries. Bill served as president of Nebraska Petroleum Marketers and was a member of the National Assc. Of Truckstop Operators. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lucille Sapp; daughters, Suzanne (Wayne) Richard of Ashland, Nancy (Dan) Edwards of Gretna, Mary (Kevin) Ziegenbein of Ashland and Cindy (Robert) Rieke of Omaha; grandchildren, Abbi (Ryan) Eccleston, Andy (Julie) Richard, Alison (Brian) Reff, Molly Edwards, Matthew (Brooke) Edwards, Amy (Adam) Anderson, Alex (Ashley) Ziegenbein, Austin (Maribeth) Ziegenbein and Max Rieke; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Zelma Drake; sister-in-law, Rose Sapp; brother-in-law, Glen Barnard; many other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hurless and Emily (Hubka) Sapp; sisters, Velora Barnard and Irene Brubaker; brothers, Ray Sapp, Dean Sapp and Lee H. Sapp; sisters-in-law, Lenora Sapp, Susie Sapp and Helene Sapp; brothers-in-law, Guy Brubaker and Kenny Drake.
