Iowa Department of Revenue Releases 2020 Retail Motor Fuel Gallons Report

The Iowa Department of Revenue released their 2020 Retail Motor Fuel Gallons Report on April 1st. Annually, the Iowa Department of Revenue is required to prepare the report to be presented to the Iowa General Assembly. The report is used by the Iowa General Assembly to monitor Iowa’s progress toward the goal of replacing 25 percent of all petroleum used in the formulation of gasoline.
2020 presented all Iowan’s with unprecedented challenges stemming from the pandemic. The 2020 Retail Motor Fuel Gallons Report highlights the impacts felt by Iowa’s retail fuel industry during the pandemic. In 2020, retail gasoline sales declined from 1.56 billion gallons in 2019 to 1.34 billion gallons in 2020. 2020 on-road diesel fuel sales declined from 637 million gallons in 2019 to 614 million gallons in 2020.
While overall fuel consumption decreased in Iowa, biofuels sales continued their positive trend in growth among fuel retailers. In the gasoline market, E15 sales grew 26 percent from 2019 to 2020. In the on-road biodiesel market, diesel fuel blended with biodiesel grew from 69.9 percent market share to 72.8 percent market share. Gallons containing between 11 percent and 19 percent biodiesel accounted for over 305 million of the 614 million on-road diesel gallons sold in 2020.
