Bottle and Can Deposit Law – We Need Your Help - Redemption Centers

Iowa’s Beverage Containers Control Law commonly referred to as Iowa’s bottle law is once again a primary topic of discussion during the 2020 Iowa Legislative Session.  Stakeholders have competing views on the how to fix Iowa’s Beverage Container Control Law.  Those competing views have led to the introduction of legislation that would increase the bottle and can deposit fee by 2 cents per gallon or alternatively, do away with the Iowa’s Beverage Container Control Law altogether. 

Iowa’s Beverage Container Control Law has been a primary topic of discussion at FUELIowa’s member regional luncheons in Carroll, Council Bluffs, and most recently Spencer.  FUELIowa members and our legislative guests have identified a number of areas within Iowa’s Beverage Container Law where the process breaks down.  For FUELIowa members, the consensus opinion is that they simply want the option to voluntarily opt-out of the law until it is repealed or substantially overhauled in a way that addresses the many burdens, financial and otherwise, cast down on their businesses.

A fundamental breakdown in Iowa’s Beverage Container Control Law is the lack of redemption centers in Iowa.  The inability of redemption centers to maintain viability under the current framework of Iowa’s Beverage Container Control Law is forcing more bottles and cans into FUELIowa member businesses.  The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) admits that they do not have an accurate list of redemption centers in the state and we are asking for your help.  Please review the list of active redemption centers published by the Iowa DNR (sorted by county) and notify john@fueliowa.com (515-421-4043) of any redemption centers listed in your area that are no longer accepting bottles and cans.
