2024 Iowa Retail Fuel Gallons Report Shows Strong Demand For Liquid Fuels

Iowa Code section 452A.33 requires all Iowa fuel retailers to report gasoline and diesel gallons to the Iowa Department of Revenue and for the Department to prepare and submit an annual report of fuel gallons to the Iowa Governor and Legislature. Last week, the Iowa Department of Revenue released their Retail Fuel Gallons Report covering fuel sales in Iowa during calendar year 2024.

According to the report released by the Iowa Department of Revenue, Iowa’s gasoline and diesel fuel markets both saw strong demand. Cumulative gasoline sales reached 1.488 billion gallons, an increase of over 100 million gallons versus calendar year 2023. Diesel fuel sales saw a similar increase in demand. 2024 diesel fuel sales reached 951 million gallons which represents an increase of approximately 121 million gallons over calendar year 2023.

Demand for biofuels remained strong in 2024. Gasoline blended with 15 percent (E15) by volume ethanol saw an increase in sales equivalent to 44 percent. In 2024, E15 sales reached 257 million gallons and represents 17 percent of all gasoline gallons sold in Iowa. 763 retailers reported selling in 2024, an increase of 274 locations. In total, 2,063 retail locations reported selling gasoline in calendar year 2024. 86.7 percent of all gasoline gallons sold in Iowa were blended with a minimum of 10 percent ethanol.

Clear biodiesel sales remained strong in 2024 as well. 71.4 percent of all diesel fuel gallons sold in Iowa during calendar year 2024 were blended with biodiesel. Biodiesel blends containing between 20 and 29 percent by volume biodiesel led the way with over 237 million gallons sold. Biodiesel blends containing between 11 and 19 percent by volume biodiesel totaled nearly 170 million gallons sold.

Unfortunately, dyed diesel fuel, used primarily for off-road purposes, continued to lag well behind the pace set by the on-road diesel market. A paltry 12.7 percent of Iowa’s 271 million gallon dyed diesel fuel market was blended with biodiesel. Dyed biodiesel blends containing between 5 and 10 percent by volume biodiesel led the way in 2024, accounting for 14.3 million gallons sold.
